The Story

Ilyas (peace be upon him), known as Elijah in biblical traditions, was sent to the people of Baalbek in ancient Lebanon/Syria who had begun worshipping an idol called Baal.

He called his people back to the worship of Allah alone, saying: "Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baal and leave the Best of creators - Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?"

Most of his people rejected him and continued their idol worship. The Quran mentions him among the prophets who are greeted with peace and praised for their righteous deeds.

His story reminds us that prophets were sent to every nation that strayed from monotheism, and that idol worship in any form is the gravest of sins.
