Miracle
Wisdom from childhood
The Story
Yahya (peace be upon him) was the miraculous son of Zakariyya and his elderly wife. His name, which means "he lives" or "God gives life," was chosen by Allah - no one before had this name.
From his youth, Yahya was given wisdom, compassion, and purity. The Quran describes him as "dutiful to his parents, and he was not arrogant or disobedient." He was given the scripture while still a child.
Yahya lived a life of extreme piety and asceticism. He would weep from fear of Allah and spent his time in worship. He confirmed the coming of Isa (Jesus) and prepared people for his message.
He was known for his kindness, his call to repentance, and his fearless speaking of truth. Islamic tradition holds that he was martyred for speaking against the corrupt ruler of his time.
Yahya is one of the few people specifically mentioned as being greeted with peace by Allah: "Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he will be raised alive."
