وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
The Beginning - Creation Story
البداية - قصة الخلق

The story of human existence begins with the creation of our father Adam (peace be upon him). Allah created him with His own Hands, breathed into him from His spirit, and honored him above all creation. Understanding this beginning is essential to understanding our purpose.
إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ
“When your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay."”
Creation of Adam from Clay
خلق آدم من طين
Allah created Adam from clay, fashioning him with His own Hands - an honor given to no other creation. The process involved multiple stages: dust, then clay, then molded mud, and finally dried clay like pottery. This humble origin reminds us of our nature and our dependence on our Creator.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
“And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.”
الَّذِي أَحْسَنَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ ۖ وَبَدَأَ خَلْقَ الْإِنسَانِ مِن طِينٍ
“Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.”
خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِن صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ
“He created man from clay like pottery.”
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
“So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down to him in prostration.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
خَلَقَ اللَّهُ آدَمَ عَلَى صُورَتِهِ طُولُهُ سِتُّونَ ذِرَاعًا فَلَمَّا خَلَقَهُ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَسَلِّمْ عَلَى أُولَئِكَ النَّفَرِ مِنَ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ جُلُوسٌ فَاسْتَمِعْ مَا يُحَيُّونَكَ فَإِنَّهَا تَحِيَّتُكَ وَتَحِيَّةُ ذُرِّيَّتِكَ
“Allah created Adam in His image, sixty cubits tall.”

Teaching Adam the Names
تعليم آدم الأسماء
After creating Adam, Allah taught him the names of all things - a knowledge that even the angels did not possess. This demonstrated the special capacity for knowledge that Allah placed in humanity, establishing our role as beings capable of understanding and naming creation.
وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَـٰؤُلَاءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
“And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."”
قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ
“They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."”
قَالَ يَا آدَمُ أَنبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ ۖ فَلَمَّا أَنبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
“He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth?"”

Angels Prostrating to Adam
سجود الملائكة لآدم
Allah commanded all the angels to prostrate to Adam - not as worship, but as a sign of honor and respect for this new creation. This prostration was an act of obedience to Allah and recognition of the special status He granted to humanity.
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ
“And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.”
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ
“And We have certainly created you, then fashioned you; then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblis. He was not of those who prostrated.”
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ قَالَ أَأَسْجُدُ لِمَنْ خَلَقْتَ طِينًا
“And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblis. He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"”

Iblis's Refusal and Pride
رفض إبليس وكبره
Iblis (Satan) was among those commanded to prostrate, but he refused out of arrogance and pride. He considered himself superior because he was created from fire while Adam was created from clay. This pride led to his expulsion from Allah's mercy and his eternal enmity toward humanity.
قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
“Allah said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."”
قَالَ فَاهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَاخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ
“Allah said, "Descend from it, for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased."”
قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ الْعَالِينَ
“Allah said, "O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant, or were you among the haughty?"”
قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ ۖ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ
“He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."”
قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ • وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
“Allah said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled. And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense."”
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ
“Pride is disdaining the truth and looking down on people.”

Creation of Hawa (Eve)
خلق حواء
Allah created Hawa (Eve) from Adam to be his companion and spouse. She was created from him so that they would find comfort and tranquility in one another, establishing the foundation of human society and the family unit.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً
“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women.”
هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا
“It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
اسْتَوْصُوا بِالنِّسَاءِ فَإِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ خُلِقَتْ مِنْ ضِلَعٍ وَإِنَّ أَعْوَجَ شَىْءٍ فِي الضِّلَعِ أَعْلاَهُ فَإِنْ ذَهَبْتَ تُقِيمُهُ كَسَرْتَهُ وَإِنْ تَرَكْتَهُ لَمْ يَزَلْ أَعْوَجَ فَاسْتَوْصُوا بِالنِّسَاءِ
“Treat women kindly, for woman was created from a rib.”

Life in Paradise Before the Test
الحياة في الجنة قبل الاختبار
Adam and Hawa were placed in Paradise where they could enjoy all its blessings freely, with only one prohibition - they were forbidden from approaching a specific tree. This single command would become the test that would determine the future of humanity.
وَقُلْنَا يَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنْهَا رَغَدًا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
“And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in abundance wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."”
وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
“And O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”

The Fall and Earth
الهبوط إلى الأرض

The story of humanity's descent to Earth is one of temptation, mistake, repentance, and divine mercy. It establishes the pattern that would define human existence: the struggle between obedience and desire, and the path back to Allah through repentance.
قُلْنَا اهْبِطُوا مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا ۖ فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
“We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve."”
The Forbidden Tree Test
اختبار الشجرة المحرمة
Allah gave Adam and Hawa complete freedom in Paradise with only one restriction: do not approach this tree. This single prohibition was a test of obedience and gratitude. The command was clear, yet through Satan's deception, they would falter.
وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
“But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.”
وَقُلْنَا يَا آدَمُ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا عَدُوٌّ لَّكَ وَلِزَوْجِكَ فَلَا يُخْرِجَنَّكُمَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَتَشْقَىٰ
“And We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer."”

- Adam was warned about Satan being his enemy

Satan's Deception
خداع الشيطان
Satan, sworn enemy of Adam and his descendants, approached them with whispers and false promises. He swore to them that he was a sincere advisor, promising them eternal life and a kingdom that would never decay. Through his deception, they ate from the tree.
فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ
“Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that will never decay?"”
فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْآتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَـٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّا أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ
“But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts. He said, "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree except that you become angels or become of the immortal."”
وَقَاسَمَهُمَا إِنِّي لَكُمَا لَمِنَ النَّاصِحِينَ
“And he swore to them, "Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."”
فَدَلَّاهُمَا بِغُرُورٍ ۚ فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْآتُهُمَا وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ
“So he made them fall through deception. And when they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten together over themselves from the leaves of Paradise.”

The Fall to Earth
الهبوط إلى الأرض
After they ate from the tree, Adam and Hawa realized their mistake. Allah called to them, and they acknowledged their wrongdoing. As a consequence, they were sent down to Earth, but with the promise that guidance would come to them and their descendants.
وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَن تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُل لَّكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ
“And their Lord called to them, "Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?"”
قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
“They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."”
قَالَ اهْبِطُوا بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ وَلَكُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ مُسْتَقَرٌّ وَمَتَاعٌ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
“Allah said, "Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time."”
قَالَ اهْبِطَا مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا ۖ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ عَدُوٌّ ۖ فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدًى فَمَنِ اتَّبَعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشْقَىٰ
“Allah said, "Descend from it - all, your descendants being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer."”

Allah's Promise and Satan's Vow
وعد الله وقسم الشيطان
As humanity began its journey on Earth, two paths were established: Allah's promise of guidance and mercy for those who follow it, and Satan's vow to mislead and deceive as many as possible. This sets the stage for the great test of human existence.
فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
“Whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
“And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.”
قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
“Satan said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path."”
ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ
“Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.”
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ • قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ
“Satan said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." Allah said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved."”
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ • إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
“Satan said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make disobedience attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all. Except, among them, Your chosen servants."”

Our Purpose - Why We Exist
غايتنا - لماذا نحن موجودون

The fundamental question of human existence - "Why are we here?" - is answered clearly in the Quran. Allah created us for a noble purpose: to worship Him alone, to serve as His vicegerents on Earth, and to fulfill the covenant we made with Him before our worldly existence.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
Created for Worship
خُلقنا للعبادة
The purpose of our creation is stated explicitly in the Quran: to worship Allah alone. This worship is not limited to ritual acts but encompasses every aspect of our lives when done with the right intention and in accordance with divine guidance.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ
“I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.”
قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds."”
لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ ۖ وَبِذَٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
“No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.”
قُلْ إِنِّي أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ مُخْلِصًا لَّهُ الدِّينَ
“Say, "Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion."”
Narrated by Mu'adh ibn Jabal
حَقُّ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ وَلاَ يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَحَقُّ الْعِبَادِ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ لاَ يُعَذِّبَ مَنْ لاَ يُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا
“The right of Allah over His servants is that they worship Him alone.”

Definition of Worship (Ibadah)
تعريف العبادة
Worship (ibadah) in Islam is comprehensive - it includes not only ritual acts like prayer and fasting, but every permissible action done with good intention seeking Allah's pleasure. Working to provide for one's family, treating others kindly, and even sleeping with the intention to gain strength for worship are all forms of ibadah.
وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا ۖ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good.”
وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.”
Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab
إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
“Actions are but by intentions.”
Narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari
الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الإِيمَانِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلأُ الْمِيزَانَ وَسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلآنِ أَوْ تَمْلأُ مَا بَيْنَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ
“Purification is half of faith.”

Being Allah's Vicegerent (Khalifah)
الخلافة في الأرض
Allah appointed humanity as His vicegerents (khulafa) on Earth - trustees given authority to establish His laws, maintain justice, and care for creation. This is an immense responsibility and honor that distinguishes humans from other creatures.
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً
“And when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a khalifah (vicegerent)."”
يَا دَاوُودُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاكَ خَلِيفَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ
“O David, indeed We have made you a khalifah upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth.”
وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَكُمْ خَلَائِفَ الْأَرْضِ وَرَفَعَ بَعْضَكُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَاتٍ لِّيَبْلُوَكُمْ فِي مَا آتَاكُمْ
“And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees that He may try you through what He has given you.”

This primordial covenant is embedded in our fitrah (natural disposition), which is why the truth of Islam resonates with the pure human heart.
وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَنِي آدَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَا
“And when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified."”
أَن تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَـٰذَا غَافِلِينَ
“Lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware."”
أَوْ تَقُولُوا إِنَّمَا أَشْرَكَ آبَاؤُنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا ذُرِّيَّةً مِّن بَعْدِهِمْ ۖ أَفَتُهْلِكُنَا بِمَا فَعَلَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ
“Or lest you say, "It was only that our fathers associated others with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?"”

مَا مِنْ مَوْلُودٍ إِلاَّ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ فَأَبَوَاهُ يُهَوِّدَانِهِ أَوْ يُنَصِّرَانِهِ أَوْ يُمَجِّسَانِهِ
“Every child is born upon the fitrah (natural disposition).”

الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا
“He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed.”
Life is a Test
الحياة اختبار
Allah explicitly states that the purpose of creating life and death is to test humanity. This test distinguishes who will be best in deeds, who will remain patient in hardship, and who will be grateful in ease.
الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ
“He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.”
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ
“Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?”
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۖ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ صَدَقُوا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكَاذِبِينَ
“And We certainly tested those before them. And Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.”

إِنَّ عِظَمَ الْجَزَاءِ مَعَ عِظَمِ الْبَلاَءِ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ إِذَا أَحَبَّ قَوْمًا ابْتَلاَهُمْ فَمَنْ رَضِيَ فَلَهُ الرِّضَا وَمَنْ سَخِطَ فَلَهُ السَّخَطُ
“The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial.”

وَنَبْلُوكُم بِالشَّرِّ وَالْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةً ۖ وَإِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ
“And We test you with evil and with good as trial; and to Us you will be returned.”
فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ
“And as for man, when his Lord tries him and is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."”
وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ
“But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."”

عَجَبًا لأَمْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِ إِنَّ أَمْرَهُ كُلَّهُ خَيْرٌ وَلَيْسَ ذَاكَ لأَحَدٍ إِلاَّ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ إِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ سَرَّاءُ شَكَرَ فَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُ وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ ضَرَّاءُ صَبَرَ فَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُ
“How wonderful is the affair of the believer!”

“Paradise is surrounded by hardships and Hell is surrounded by pleasures.”

لَمَّا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَالنَّارَ أَرْسَلَ جِبْرِيلَ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ فَقَالَ انْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا وَإِلَى مَا أَعْدَدْتُ لأَهْلِهَا فِيهَا
“When Allah created Paradise and Hell, He sent Jibril to Paradise...”

وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِن وَمَن شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ
“And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve."”
مَّنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فَعَلَيْهَا ۗ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ
“Whoever does righteousness - it is for his soul; and whoever does evil - it is against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to His servants.”
وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
“And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.”
إِنَّا هَدَيْنَاهُ السَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
“Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.”

Tests as Purification

“No fatigue, disease, sorrow, or distress befalls a Muslim...”

“No calamity befalls a Muslim...”

مَا يَزَالُ الْبَلاَءُ بِالْمُؤْمِنِ وَالْمُؤْمِنَةِ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ وَمَالِهِ حَتَّى يَلْقَى اللَّهَ وَمَا عَلَيْهِ خَطِيئَةٌ
“The believing man or woman continues to have affliction...”

The soul is one of the great mysteries of existence. While its full nature is known only to Allah, He has revealed important information about its states and struggles. Understanding the nafs (self/soul) helps us recognize our internal battles and work toward spiritual purification.
وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
“And they ask you about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And you have been given of knowledge only a little."”
Information About the Soul
معلومات عن الروح
The true nature of the soul is among the knowledge that Allah has kept hidden from us. When asked about it, the Prophet was instructed to say that it is from the affair of Allah, and that our knowledge is limited. What we do know is that Allah breathed into Adam from His spirit, giving humans a special spiritual dimension.
وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
“And they ask you about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And you have been given of knowledge only a little."”
ثُمَّ سَوَّاهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِهِ
“Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His spirit.”

Nafs al-Ammara (The Commanding Soul)

وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي ۚ إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي
“And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.”

وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ
“And I swear by the self-reproaching soul.”

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ • ارْجِعِي إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً • فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي • وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي
“O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing to Him. Enter among My servants. And enter My Paradise.”
أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

The Fitrah (Natural Disposition)
الفطرة

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ
“So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. Adhere to the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah.”

كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ فَأَبَوَاهُ يُهَوِّدَانِهِ أَوْ يُنَصِّرَانِهِ أَوْ يُمَجِّسَانِهِ

“I created My servants as hunafa (inclining to worship Allah alone).”

Satan declared war on humanity from the moment Adam was created. Understanding his tactics and strategies is essential for protecting ourselves. He attacks through whispers, beautifies sin, and exploits our weaknesses - but he has no power over those who sincerely seek Allah's protection.
إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا
“Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy.”
Satan's Oath to Mislead Mankind
قسم الشيطان على إضلال البشر
When expelled from Paradise, Satan made a solemn oath to mislead humanity. He declared he would sit on the straight path and attack from every direction. This is not a passive enemy - he actively works to lead people astray.
قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
“Satan said, "Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path."”
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
“Satan said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make disobedience attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all."”

His Attack from Four Directions
هجومه من أربع جهات

ثُمَّ لَآتِيَنَّهُم مِّن بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَن شَمَائِلِهِمْ ۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ
“Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.”

Beautifying Sin (Waswasa)
تزيين الذنوب والوسوسة
Satan's primary weapon is waswasa - whispering evil suggestions and making sin appear attractive. He has no power to force anyone; he can only suggest and beautify. His whispers target our weaknesses and make the prohibited seem desirable.
مِن شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ • الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ • مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
“From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind.”
وَمَا كَانَ لِيَ عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَانٍ إِلَّا أَن دَعَوْتُكُمْ فَاسْتَجَبْتُمْ لِي
“And I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me.”

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنَ الإِنْسَانِ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ
“Satan flows through the son of Adam like blood flows through the veins.”

Procrastination and False Promises

يَعِدُهُمْ وَيُمَنِّيهِمْ ۖ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا
“Satan promises them and arouses desire in them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion.”
وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُم بِصَوْتِكَ وَأَجْلِبْ عَلَيْهِم بِخَيْلِكَ وَرَجِلِكَ وَشَارِكْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَوْلَادِ وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا
“And incite whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion.”

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ
“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan.”
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ ۚ وَمَن يَتَّبِعْ خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْمُرُ بِالْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ
“O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan - indeed, he enjoins immorality and wrongdoing.”

Protection Against Satan

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
“So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled.”
وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
“And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing.”
إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ سُلْطَانٌ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
“Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.”

مَنْ قَرَأَ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ مَكْتُوبَةٍ لَمْ يَمْنَعْهُ مِنْ دُخُولِ الْجَنَّةِ إِلاَّ أَنْ يَمُوتَ
“Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer...”

إِذَا أَوَيْتَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ فَاقْرَأْ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ لَنْ يَزَالَ عَلَيْكَ مِنَ اللَّهِ حَافِظٌ وَلاَ يَقْرَبُكَ شَيْطَانٌ حَتَّى تُصْبِحَ
“When you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi.”

Desires and Their Management
الشهوات وإدارتها

Allah created humans with desires (shahawat) - for food, intimacy, wealth, and more. These desires are not evil in themselves; they serve important purposes. The challenge is to channel them through lawful means and control them when they pull toward what is forbidden.
زُيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّهَوَاتِ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ وَالْبَنِينَ وَالْقَنَاطِيرِ الْمُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ
“Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver.”
Shahawat (Desires) and Their Purpose
الشهوات والحكمة منها
Allah made certain things attractive to humans - spouses, children, wealth, possessions. These desires serve important purposes: they motivate us to work, to marry, to build families and societies. The problem is not the desires themselves, but pursuing them through prohibited means or making them the ultimate goal of life.
زُيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّهَوَاتِ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ وَالْبَنِينَ وَالْقَنَاطِيرِ الْمُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَالْخَيْلِ الْمُسَوَّمَةِ وَالْأَنْعَامِ وَالْحَرْثِ ۗ ذَٰلِكَ مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسْنُ الْمَآبِ
“Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return.”

Halal Outlets vs. Haram
المباح والمحرم
For every desire, Allah has provided lawful outlets. The desire for intimacy is fulfilled through marriage. The desire for wealth is fulfilled through lawful work. The desire for food is fulfilled through halal provisions. Islam does not suppress desires but channels them properly.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا
“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good.”
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ • إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
“And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed.”

وَفِي بُضْعِ أَحَدِكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ
“When one of you approaches his wife, it is charity.”

Controlling the Nafs
السيطرة على النفس
The one who controls their nafs (self/desires) when it pulls toward the forbidden achieves a high rank. This requires conscious effort, self-awareness, and reliance on Allah. The one who fears standing before their Lord and restrains the soul from desire - Paradise is their refuge.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ • فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ
“But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from unlawful inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be his refuge.”

لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ
“The strong person is not the one who can wrestle others.”

Jihad al-Nafs (Struggle with Self)
جهاد النفس

الْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ
“The mujahid is the one who strives against his own soul.”

لاَ يَزَالُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يُصِيبُهُ الْبَلاَءُ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ حَتَّى يَلْقَى اللَّهَ وَمَا عَلَيْهِ خَطِيئَةٌ
“The believer continues to face trials...”

Death and the Grave (Barzakh)
الموت والبرزخ

Death is not the end but a transition to the next phase of existence. The grave (Barzakh) is the first station of the afterlife, where souls experience a preview of their ultimate destination. Understanding what awaits motivates us to prepare properly.
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection.”
The Soul at Death
الروح عند الموت
When death approaches, the soul is extracted by the Angel of Death. For the righteous, this extraction is gentle like water flowing from a vessel. For the wicked, it is violent like thorns being pulled through wet wool. The nature of one's death reflects one's spiritual state.
قُلْ يَتَوَفَّاكُم مَّلَكُ الْمَوْتِ الَّذِي وُكِّلَ بِكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ
“Say, "The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."”
الَّذِينَ تَتَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ طَيِّبِينَ ۙ يَقُولُونَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمُ ادْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
“Those whom the angels take in a good state - they will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."”
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۙ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ
“And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved, striking their faces and their backs.”

إِذَا حَضَرَ الْمُؤْمِنَ نَزَلَتْ مَلاَئِكَةٌ بِيضُ الْوُجُوهِ كَأَنَّ وُجُوهَهُمُ الشَّمْسُ مَعَهُمْ كَفَنٌ مِنْ أَكْفَانِ الْجَنَّةِ
“When the believing servant is about to depart this world...”

The Grave as First Station
القبر أول منازل الآخرة

وَمِن وَرَائِهِم بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
“And behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected.”

الْقَبْرُ أَوَّلُ مَنْزِلٍ مِنْ مَنَازِلِ الآخِرَةِ فَإِنْ نَجَا مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَيْسَرُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْجُ مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَشَدُّ
“The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter.”

Questions in the Grave
أسئلة القبر
Every person will be questioned in their grave by two angels. They will ask three fundamental questions: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man (referring to the Prophet)? The believer will answer correctly, while the disbeliever will fail.

إِذَا وُضِعَ الْعَبْدُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَتَوَلَّى عَنْهُ أَصْحَابُهُ أَتَاهُ مَلَكَانِ فَيُقْعِدَانِهِ فَيَقُولاَنِ لَهُ مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ
“When the deceased is placed in his grave, two angels come...”

وَأَمَّا الْكَافِرُ أَوِ الْمُنَافِقُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ مَا كُنْتَ تَقُولُ فِي هَذَا الرَّجُلِ فَيَقُولُ لاَ أَدْرِي
“As for the disbeliever or hypocrite, he will be asked...”

Punishment and Reward in Barzakh
العذاب والنعيم في البرزخ
The grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Hell. Righteous souls enjoy comfort, expanded space, and glimpses of Paradise. Wicked souls experience constriction, punishment, and views of their place in Hell.
النَّارُ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا غُدُوًّا وَعَشِيًّا ۖ وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ
“The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears, it will be said, "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."”

الْقَبْرُ رَوْضَةٌ مِنْ رِيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ أَوْ حُفْرَةٌ مِنْ حُفَرِ النَّارِ

“A caller calls from heaven: My servant has spoken the truth...”

What Benefits the Deceased
ما ينفع الميت
After death, most deeds cease, but some continue to benefit the deceased. Ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge left behind, and righteous children who pray for them continue to add to their scale of good deeds.

إِذَا مَاتَ الإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ
“When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three.”
Narrated by Aisha
إِنَّ أُمِّي افْتُلِتَتْ نَفْسُهَا فَهَلْ لَهَا أَجْرٌ إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ عَنْهَا قَالَ نَعَمْ
“My mother has died. Will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?”

Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah)
يوم القيامة

The Day of Judgment is the ultimate accountability, when all of creation will stand before Allah. Every deed, word, and intention will be examined. This is the day when justice will be perfectly established and eternal destinations will be determined.
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
“The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds.”
Signs of the Hour
علامات الساعة
Before the Day of Judgment, there will be signs - both minor and major. The minor signs have been occurring throughout history, while the major signs will occur closer to the end. These signs serve as reminders and warnings.
فَهَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا السَّاعَةَ أَن تَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً ۖ فَقَدْ جَاءَ أَشْرَاطُهَا
“Do they await but the Hour that it should come upon them unexpectedly? For indeed, its signs have already come.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ فَرَآهَا النَّاسُ آمَنُوا أَجْمَعُونَ
“The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west.”

The Trumpet Blast
النفخ في الصور
The Day of Judgment will begin with the blowing of the Trumpet by the angel Israfil. The first blast will cause all living things to die. The second blast will resurrect all of creation to stand before Allah.
وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۖ ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِيهِ أُخْرَىٰ فَإِذَا هُمْ قِيَامٌ يَنظُرُونَ
“And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ • وَحُمِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً • فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
“Then when the Horn is blown with one blast, and the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow - then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur.”

Resurrection
البعث
After the second blast, all humans who ever lived will be resurrected from their graves. They will emerge barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, confused and terrified, to face their judgment.
وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُم مِّنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنسِلُونَ • قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَن بَعَثَنَا مِن مَّرْقَدِنَا
“And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten. They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?"”
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنشَرَهُ
“Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.”

يُحْشَرُ النَّاسُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ حُفَاةً عُرَاةً غُرْلاً
“People will be gathered barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.”

The Gathering
الحشر
All of creation will be gathered on a vast plain for the reckoning. The sun will be brought close, and people will sweat according to their deeds. Some will be shaded by their charity, while others will drown in their own sweat.
وَحَشَرْنَاهُمْ فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًا
“And We will gather them and not leave behind from them anyone.”
يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ الْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى الرَّحْمَٰنِ وَفْدًا
“The day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation.”

تُدْنَى الشَّمْسُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنَ الْخَلْقِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ مِنْهُمْ كَمِقْدَارِ مِيلٍ
“The sun will be brought close to the people on the Day of Resurrection.”

The Reckoning
الحساب
Every person will be brought before Allah to account for their deeds. Records will be presented, and nothing will be hidden. Even the weight of an atom of good or evil will be shown. Each person will be their own witness.
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ • ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم
“Indeed, to Us is their return. Then indeed, upon Us is their account.”
اقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا
“Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant.”
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ • وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ
“So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.”

مَنْ نُوقِشَ الْحِسَابَ عُذِّبَ
“Whoever is called to account will be punished.”

The Scales (Mizan)
الميزان
On the Day of Judgment, scales will be set up to weigh deeds. Those whose good deeds outweigh their bad will succeed. Those whose bad deeds outweigh their good will fail. These are real scales that weigh the reality of one's deeds.
وَالْوَزْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَـٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
“And the weighing that Day will be true. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful.”
وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُولَـٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يَظْلِمُونَ
“And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who have lost their souls because they were unjust toward Our verses.”
وَنَضَعُ الْمَوَازِينَ الْقِسْطَ لِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ فَلَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا
“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all.”

كَلِمَتَانِ خَفِيفَتَانِ عَلَى اللِّسَانِ ثَقِيلَتَانِ فِي الْمِيزَانِ حَبِيبَتَانِ إِلَى الرَّحْمَنِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
“Two words are light on the tongue but heavy on the scales: SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil-Azim.”

The Bridge (Sirat)
الصراط
All people must cross the Sirat, a bridge laid over Hell leading to Paradise. It is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword. People will cross at speeds according to their deeds - some like lightning, some crawling, and some falling into the Fire.
وَإِن مِّنكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِيًّا
“And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.”

يُضْرَبُ الصِّرَاطُ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَىْ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَكُونُ أَوَّلَ مَنْ يُجِيزُ مِنَ الرُّسُلِ بِأُمَّتِهِ
“The Sirat will be laid over Hell. I and my Ummah will be the first to cross it.”

Intercession (Shafa'ah)
الشفاعة
On that Day, Allah will permit certain people to intercede for others. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) will be granted the greatest intercession. However, intercession only benefits those whom Allah permits and is pleased with.
مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ
“Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?”
يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا تَنفَعُ الشَّفَاعَةُ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَرَضِيَ لَهُ قَوْلًا
“That Day, no intercession will benefit except one whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
أَنَا سَيِّدُ وَلَدِ آدَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَأَوَّلُ مَنْ يَنْشَقُّ عَنْهُ الْقَبْرُ وَأَوَّلُ شَافِعٍ وَأَوَّلُ مُشَفَّعٍ
“I will be the leader of the children of Adam on the Day of Resurrection.”

The Final Destination
المصير النهائي

After all the stages of Judgment, humanity will reach their final, eternal destinations: Paradise for those who believed and did righteous deeds, and Hell for those who rejected faith. These are not symbolic but real places of eternal existence.
فَرِيقٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَفَرِيقٌ فِي السَّعِيرِ
“A group will be in Paradise and a group in the Blaze.”
Description of Jannah (Paradise)
وصف الجنة
Paradise is beyond human imagination - what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has conceived. It contains rivers of water, milk, wine, and honey. Its inhabitants will have whatever they desire, in eternal youth and bliss, with the greatest reward being to see the Face of Allah.
فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
“No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.”
مَّثَلُ الْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي وُعِدَ الْمُتَّقُونَ ۖ فِيهَا أَنْهَارٌ مِّن مَّاءٍ غَيْرِ آسِنٍ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِّن لَّبَنٍ لَّمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ طَعْمُهُ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِّنْ خَمْرٍ لَّذَّةٍ لِّلشَّارِبِينَ وَأَنْهَارٌ مِّنْ عَسَلٍ مُّصَفًّى
“The description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised: therein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey.”
لَهُم مَّا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ
“They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
أَعْدَدْتُ لِعِبَادِي الصَّالِحِينَ مَا لاَ عَيْنٌ رَأَتْ وَلاَ أُذُنٌ سَمِعَتْ وَلاَ خَطَرَ عَلَى قَلْبِ بَشَرٍ
“I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has conceived.”

إِذَا دَخَلَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى تُرِيدُونَ شَيْئًا أَزِيدُكُمْ
“When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allah will say: Do you want anything more?”

Description of Jahannam (Hell)
وصف جهنم
Hell is the abode of torment for those who rejected faith and committed evil. Its fire is far hotter than worldly fire, its chains are unbreakable, and its punishment is unimaginable. Yet even this serves a purpose - as a just consequence and a warning to those still alive.
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا • لِّلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا • لَّابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا
“Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait, for the transgressors, a place of return, in which they will remain for ages.”
إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ • تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ
“When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a dreadful inhaling while it boils up. It almost bursts with rage.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
نَارُكُمْ هَذِهِ الَّتِي يُوقِدُ ابْنُ آدَمَ جُزْءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ جُزْءًا مِنْ حَرِّ جَهَنَّمَ
“The fire that the children of Adam kindle is one seventieth part of the fire of Hell.”
Narrated by Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir
إِنَّ أَهْوَنَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ عَذَابًا رَجُلٌ فِي أَخْمَصِ قَدَمَيْهِ جَمْرَتَانِ يَغْلِي مِنْهُمَا دِمَاغُهُ
“The least punished person of the people of Hell will be a man under whose feet will be placed two hot coals.”

Levels of Paradise
درجات الجنة
Paradise has one hundred levels, each higher than the one below. The highest is Firdaus, beneath which the rivers of Paradise flow and above which is the Throne of Allah. The level one attains depends on their deeds and faith.
انظُرْ كَيْفَ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ ۚ وَلَلْآخِرَةُ أَكْبَرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَأَكْبَرُ تَفْضِيلًا
“Look how We have favored some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees and greater in distinction.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِائَةُ دَرَجَةٍ أَعَدَّهَا اللَّهُ لِلْمُجَاهِدِينَ فِي سَبِيلِهِ كُلُّ دَرَجَتَيْنِ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا كَمَا بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالأَرْضِ
“Paradise has one hundred levels which Allah has prepared for those who strive in His cause.”

Why Good Deeds Alone Don't Suffice
لماذا لا تكفي الأعمال وحدها
A profound teaching from the Prophet: no one enters Paradise by their deeds alone, not even the Prophet himself. Rather, it is Allah's mercy that admits people to Paradise. Yet deeds are essential - they attract and earn Allah's mercy and determine one's level in Paradise.
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
لَنْ يُدْخِلَ أَحَدًا عَمَلُهُ الْجَنَّةَ قَالُوا وَلاَ أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ لاَ وَلاَ أَنَا إِلاَّ أَنْ يَتَغَمَّدَنِي اللَّهُ بِفَضْلٍ وَرَحْمَةٍ
“None of you will enter Paradise by his deeds alone.”

Allah's Mercy
رحمة الله
Allah's mercy encompasses all things and prevails over His wrath. He divided mercy into one hundred parts, sending down only one part to Earth - through which all creation shows compassion. The remaining ninety-nine parts are reserved for the Day of Judgment.
وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ
“And My mercy encompasses all things.”
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا
“Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ الرَّحْمَةَ يَوْمَ خَلَقَهَا مِائَةَ رَحْمَةٍ فَأَمْسَكَ عِنْدَهُ تِسْعًا وَتِسْعِينَ رَحْمَةً وَأَرْسَلَ فِي خَلْقِهِ كُلِّهِمْ رَحْمَةً وَاحِدَةً
“Allah divided mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Himself and sent down one part to the earth.”

لَمَّا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ الْخَلْقَ كَتَبَ فِي كِتَابِهِ وَهْوَ يَكْتُبُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَهْوَ وَضْعٌ عِنْدَهُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ إِنَّ رَحْمَتِي تَغْلِبُ غَضَبِي
“When Allah created creation, He wrote in a Book which is with Him above the Throne: My mercy prevails over My wrath.”
