Definition
Kibr is the rejection of truth and looking down upon people. It is the disease that caused Iblis to be expelled from Paradise. The arrogant person sees themselves as superior to others and refuses to accept guidance when it contradicts their ego.
Signs & Symptoms
- 1Difficulty accepting criticism or correction from others
- 2Looking down on people due to wealth, lineage, knowledge, or appearance
- 3Refusing to admit mistakes or apologize
- 4Constantly seeking praise and recognition
- 5Walking with a proud gait and speaking with condescension
- 6Becoming angry when others do not show expected respect
Dangers & Consequences
- Even an atom of arrogance prevents entry into Paradise
- It was the first sin committed and led to the fall of Iblis
- It blinds the heart from recognizing truth
- It destroys relationships and creates enemies
- It leads to other sins like envy, anger, and oppression
Quranic Warnings
إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ
“Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.”
وَلَا تُصَعِّرْ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمْشِ فِي الْأَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۖ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ
“And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”
أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِّلْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ
“Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?”
Prophetic Guidance
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Masud
لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ
“No one who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Masud
الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ
“Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”
Narrated by Haritha ibn Wahb
“Shall I not inform you of the people of Paradise? They comprise every humble person who is considered weak but if they were to swear an oath by Allah, He would fulfill it. Shall I not inform you of the people of Hellfire? They comprise every cruel, violent, proud and conceited person.”
